Birth Control Pills Cause Abortions?

A friend wrote to me today asking if I had any information on whether or not Birth Control Pills cause abortions. I’ve shared this information before, but it bears repeating. I sure wish someone would have shared it with me at the beginning of my marriage.

The birth control pill (oral contraception) causes unintended abortions. Here’s how: In basic terms, it has one chemical (estrogen) that tries to prevent a woman’s body from releasing an egg (this is what that most Christians understand BC pills to do) BUT it also has a second chemical (progestin) that thins the lining of the woman’s womb to keep an embryo from being able to attach and grow (most Christians do not know this).

The first chemical does not always keep eggs from being released. If one is released and it meets up with sperm, a baby is created. However, as the baby floats down the tube to the womb to attach and begin growing… it is unable to attach because of the second chemical. This makes the womb an un-hospitable place for the baby, and the baby will be flushed out of the body with the woman’s period.

The reason they can say “the birth control pill is NOT abortive” is because they don’t consider it abortion, because no PREGNANCY has yet happened. In other words, they don’t count a PREGNANCYto have started until the embryo attaches in the womb. Since the second chemical keeps it from attaching, you’ve “prevented pregnancy.” This is why there is much confusion among Christians.

If you believe that life begins when the sperm and egg meet, then the BC pill is clearly a way to prevent a fully human life from getting the food/oxygen it needs to live… and, in that way, extinguishing life.

On a side note, I believe this may also be why God (in the OT) forbids husbands to have relations with their wives while their wives are on their period. If you think about it for a moment, somewhere in that material that is being flushed out by the body is an egg. If it becomes fertilized during relations, you are essentially killing your child at that moment because there is not any way for the baby to implant in the womb at that time. (Sorry if this is too much info.)

For more information on this subject, see the link below. Or, for actual “proof,” just take out that little white paper that came with your BC prescription and read it all the way through. It’s right there, in black and white if you just take time to read it. (Look for language like “thinning of the endometrium” ((the wall of the womb)) and “reduces the likelihood of implantation.”)

My husband and I used BC pills for the first several years of our marriage. We had no idea about any of this. I share this with you all because many of you believe so strongly in protecting babies in the womb that you spend time sharing with women entering abortion clinics. I’m sharing with you now because I deeply regret that no one told me I was doing essentially the same thing. In fact, the “day after” pill (the abortion pill), is nothing more than a very high dose of the second chemical given to insure that any embryos will be flushed out with the period.

Here is a quote from Randy Alcorn’s research on the subject:

“In summary, according to multiple references throughout The Physician’s Desk Reference, which articulate the research findings of all the birth control pill manufacturers, there are not one but three mechanisms of birth control pills:

1. inhibiting ovulation (the primary mechanism),

2. thickening the cervical mucus, thereby making it more difficult for sperm to travel to the egg, and

3. thinning and shriveling the lining of the uterus to the point that it is unable or less able to facilitate the implantation of the newly fertilized egg.

The first two mechanisms are contraceptive. The third is abortive.”
